I am so happy to virtually welcome you to my new studio! I have been selected as a 2023-2024 Artist In Residence at Bailey Contemporary Arts, Pompano Beach, FL.
In May 2023, I submitted my application with images of current work and proposal for new work. Weeks later I had an interview. And voila! Here I am!
There are eight of us who have a private room to create new work, teach a class, and have a solo month long exhibition. Stay tuned for more info on that!

I'm delighted to be exhibiting in this space.
As a non-traditional white box gallery, it gave me the opportunity to create a dialog between my works that is a first!
When I initially visited the space and saw the layout and gray carpet walls, I wasn't sure how my artwork would look. It took weeks before the opening to curate a series of works with which I was happy. I spent time in my studio experimenting with different layouts, artwork selections, and creative concepts.
The ideas percolated. I decided that although I didn't have the conditions to create installations of the past, I would let the large works talk to one another in different configuration. I was also inspired to create two abstract canvas panels and layer an existing piece and a new painting over them. The combination of canvas, wood, string and panels made an impact that I hadn't expected. During installation, I added a string and wood solutions on walls perpendicular to two large works, Push Back and Dare To Know (Sapere Aude). They mirror the flora and fauna, architectural, and geometric imagery in the paintings.
This has been a super satisfying sensory exercise in creativity on multiple levels!

Much like the spaces in the Mallarmé poem, the geographical spaces between the artists and commingling of ideas have activated the whole of the group. By coming together in the space of the gallery, these gaps are momentarily bridged, and the participants exist, for a time, via their work, in a shared physical context.”

We met by chance.
A few months ago 9 artists and one graphic designer/writer gathered on Zoom from Mexico, Austria, Uruguay and the United States. Our art salon was organized and led by Andrea Champlin, a powerful artist, mentor and teacher.
We artists attended a Summer Residency at the School of Visual Arts, NYC at one time or another. My 5-week experience in person residency was pre-Covid, the summer of 2019.
I was elated to meet Andrea at the residency. The stars aligned for me that summer as she was instrumental in stimulating my artistic transformation. So I was eager for another opportunity to engage artistically with her this year.
The others in our group were strangers to me. Yet over months of weekly meetings, I have discovered and learned about their passions and perspectives in art, philosophy and life. I have been inspired to dig deeper into my own practice and explore new territory.
Serendipity evolved into intentionality. We are now indelibly attached through time and space in a beautifully and thoughtfully curated show by Andrea. Aditi Ruiz has created fantastic graphics and stories about us. Come see the show in person when in Manhattan. Stay tuned for more info virtually.

In this painting I explore competing ideas of loss and hope, and separation and unity as a result of a current global pandemic, climate chaos, and political and social divisiveness.
I am fascinated by connections between the nature of Earth’s ecosystem and the nature of humanity. My viewpoint is tied to my multicultural heritage and conviction that everyone is spiritually connected. I imagine a world of inclusiveness and solidarity between all ages, genders, cultures and races. All of creation is in harmony and of equal importance. However, these idealistic views have been challenged in the current moment.
In this piece, the cloud and sky take center stage. Their vastness and permanence evoke a sense of freedom to investigate the transforming tensions I feel. My sense of spirituality is disrupted but strong. My floating ambiguous and fluid bodies appearing out of the shadows speak to the struggles of identity equality that I investigate. Through my figures and technologies of power lines and headphones, I seek to communicate ideas of equality and harmony for all of creation. The title refers to Manganese, a Transition Metal, 25th element of the periodic table, just one of which makes up physical existence in our universe. Transfiguring makes reference to the physical and philosophical metamorphosis.
I’m interested in the legacy of historic and religious text and its poetic message for our present and future. I research verses that relate to the environment and our responsibility as steward of the Earth. Taking poetic license, I make a metaphoric transition from environmental sustainability to human sustainability and our collective responsibility to each another.
On the right side of the painting, is my hand written English translation of Qur’an 30:41. In my research I found environmental symbolism associated with this verse. For me, it resonates with the current social and political climate as well:
Corruption has appeared in both land and sea because of what peoples’ own hands have brought. May they taste of something of what they have done so that hopefully they will turn back (to righteousness).
Even in a dark atmosphere, I ask how can we transform, turn to the light and communicate unity and build a better world?

Over two years ago, I submitted my artwork for a potential exhibition at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL. With their packed schedule, their committee reviewed my artwork and in January, invited me to exhibit my artwork this September. The wait is common as galleries are often booked way in advance, and it was worth it!

The Open Studios event on August 8, 2019 was that much fun! It was a wonderful time to share our super artwork with the public, have delicious discussions, and meet awesome artists and art appreciators. Thank you all for attending!

I am thrilled to have been accepted into the five week Summer Painting Residency at the School of Visual Arts, NYC. It was an intensive experience where we had individual studios in which we could take a deep dive into our art practice and experiment with new concepts. Fabulous faculty including Steve DeFrank, Andrea Champlin, Danica Phelps, Gregory Coates and Peter Hristoff, accomplished artists in their own right, shared their knowledge and advised us on methodologies and other artists who could expand our discovery. Artist presentations by Dara Birnbaum and Alicia Grullon, and a tour of DC Moore Gallery by Peter Luke Colon, Associate Director, were energizing experiences.
My artwork flourished in this setting. I investigated concepts of the sublime, memory, rebirth, and the mythological at intersection of alternative, temporal and transcendent dimensions. I came away with new ideas to expand upon and look forward to realizing them in the coming months.
